Among the problems of up-to-date
multilingualism researches student psychological adaptation in foreign higher schools is
regarded as an extreme spontaneous situation with negative aftereffects like illness,
behaviour deviation, lower educational quality or break in educational process. Here
appears a necessity to study and optimize the process of adaptation in foreign society by
raising the student pre-departure readiness for adaptation. The purpose of the
investigation was to identify student psychological problems during their probation abroad
and find the ways to overcome them. The method of submerged interview was applied. In
order to get polar reactions we chose the respondents who represented different
specialties, went to different countries, had different probation terms and different
level of readiness for adaptation abroad (9 samples). Received empirical data proved that
most of questioned students could not clearly imagine how to solve the problem of general
orientation in a new life situation. The topical problems of badly prepared students were
a feeling of loneliness, a discontent with life conditions, stable unwillingness to
contact with foreigners as well as a cultural shock caused by the lack of actual cultural
information about foreigners’ behavioral peculiarities and generally accepted norms
which were quite difficult to follow. The investigation showed low adjustment indicators
for the questioned linguists, despite the fact of a high level of foreign language
competence. The reason was a large general uncertainty and self-inefficiency while
realizing their communicative potential. It appeared that such personal characteristics as
well developed communication skills and readiness to solve all arising problems yourself
are the guaranty of self-efficiency and high adaptivity abroad even for those people who
do not know a foreign language at all. Methodology of raising the resource of student
adaptation was developed on the basis of linguistic material and active
socio-psychological training of students going abroad on probation.
