Ukrainian president elections of 2004 were
accompanied by mass political moves at Maydan Nezalezhnosty (Independent Square) initiated
by an oppositional presidential contender V.A.Yuschenko. One of the mass psychology
phenomena are spirits of mass moves participants, their emotional states on the level of
which socio-psychological mechanisms (contagion, suggestion, inheritance operate). The
purpose of the investigation is to outline a dynamics of emotional states of political
moves participants regarding the amplitude and modality. An author’s methodology of
modality and emotional strength evaluation was applied. It is based on a choice from 35
proposed emotional state, which is true for a participant. The emotional state evaluation
was also carried out according to a number of semantic scales. The sampling covered 965
participants of the mass moves, including 98 tent-camp residents. 12 measurements were
made, that helped to analyse the dynamics of emotional states. The dominant emotional
state according to the modality (after Izard, 1981) is positive - an elation. The analysis
of dynamics through 18 days of the move indicated a constancy of this state. More than 80%
participants informed that they experienced the feelings of elation, unity, pride and
love. The analysis of semantic ties – what the experienced state may be compared with
– identified the following basic groups of answers: with nothing (15%), with a birth
(15%), with the moves for Ukrainian independence in 1991 or with some other ones (10%),
with a feeling of victory (5%). Among personal intentions, which led participants to
Maydan there were the following: to support the other participants, to show one’s
indignation, to defend one’s own choice. The content analysis of statements showed that
only 15% mentioned a contender’s person. We found some difference in emotional states
and circular reactions at the centre and periphery of Maydan and between tent-camp and
other participants.
