Scope and Purpose:

Bioethics, always a consideration, has now taken center-stage in the medical and biological sciences, as well as society in general. Stunning advances in medical technologies, decoding the human genome, gene therapy, cloning, the development and distribution of genetically modified organisms and their introduction into the food chain are only a few of many recent developments which require renewed and more intense attention to bioethical considerations.

Currently, various national scientific associations and agencies, in addition to international organisations such as UNESCO, WHO and others have placed arbitrary, and often inadequate, bioethical standards high on the list of the potential harm to which mankind is exposed. Our planned conference is to outline and discuss the principles of the “Convention for Protection of Human Rights and Dignity of the Human Being with Regard to the Application of Biology and Medicine" with an eye towards its implementation in Ukraine as well as, other FSU countries.

With this goal in mind the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine decided to conduct this, the First National Congress on Bioethics. The effort is also supported by universities, research institutes, medical institutes and public as well as, private organizations.

The organizing committee invites you to take an active part in the work and goals of the Congress, to be held in Kiev, on September 18-20, 2001.

The Aims of the Congress

The Congress will initiate and pursue discussion of key bioethical problems, which face leading scientists and specialists in the fields of biology, medicine, philosophy and human rights in Ukraine. Included will be representatives of different religious denominations, public organizations and private enterprise.

The Congress shall promote, in accordance with the law; continued official studies of bioethical problems, the implementation of bioethical principles into general practice, the inclusion and/or broadening of bioethics curricula in institutions of higher learning, the creation of a means to monitor the activity of research and medical institutions and the protection of human rights in the pursuit of the advancement of science.

Congress Structure

The Scientific Program will include lectures on the key topics, plenary and section Reports, symposia and working group discussions, seminars, and poster presentations. Proposals concerning training seminars before and/or after the congress will be entertained.

Congress Fees

Fee for participants	$ 300,00
For young scientists and students	$ 150,00

Payments will be accepted in cash at the Congress site.

Congress Languages

The Official Languages of Congress will be Ukrainian, Russian and English.

Congress Venue

The Congress will be held in Kiev on September 18-20, 2001.

Instructions for Abstract Preparation

Abstracts (prepared in Word or WordPerfect format) must be submitted on diskette or as an attachment by E-mail: <yik@nanu.kiev.ua>

Abstract format - one page single-space in 14 point “Times New Roman” font (laser printer quality). Margins: Top - 3,5 cm, Bottom - 2,0 cm, Left - 3,0 cm, Right - 2,0 cm.

The title of the Abstract must be written in all upper case, followed by a single space. Authors First initials and names and next line - names and location (City, Country) of the represented institution.

The body of Abstract should begin following a double space. The entire Abstract, including Title, should fit within a single page and not exceed the space provided by the above margins

Three hard copies (one of them signed by all authors) should be sent to the Program committee of the Congress.

Deadline for the Registration Forms - April 15, 2001.

Deadline for the Abstract submission - May 15, 2001.
