Research directions of the Institute for Potato Research Departments

Breeding department

The head of the department is a doctor of agricultural sciences Andriy A. Osipchuk

The Breeding department includes laboratories of:

  1. Biotechnology and biochemistry
  2. Basic material
  3. Breeding

16 researchers including 2 doctors and 8 candidates of sciences work at the department.

Main research directions:

  • developing potato varieties of different maturity and economic purpose with yields higher by 5-10% than yields of standard varieties, content of dry matter – 20-25%, resistant to main fungous, bacterial, virus and nematodes diseases, fit for mechanized production;
  • obtaining regenerated plants with high productivity, resistance to fungous and bacterial diseases and other useful characters by biotechnological methods;
  • forming the genobank of potatoes of Ukraine, developing methods of its maintenance, determining the expression of phenotypic characters in accessions and outlook for their use for obtaining basic breeding material and in other research works.

28 varieties developed at UAAS Institute for Potato Research and 19 varieties developed at IPR Polis’ka experimental station named after O.M. Zasukhin entered into the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine for 2004.


Technology Department

The head of the department is a candidate of agricultural sciences Petro F. Kalitsky

The Technology department includes laboratories of:

  1. Agrotechnics
  2. Plant protection
  3. Technology and mechanization
  4. Storing and processing

19 researchers including 1 doctor and 6 candidates of sciences work at the department.

Main research directions:

  • development of technological processes combining operations, machines and mechanisms for preharvest field preparation and postharvest crop conditioning;
  • improving system of potato protection against diseases and pests;
  • developing elements of agrotechnics for growing potato varieties of the Institutes breeding;
  • potato storing and processing into food products.

Seed Production Department

The head of the department is a candidate of agricultural sciences Yuriy Y. Vermenko

The Seed production department includes laboratories of:

    1. Clonal micropropagation
    2. Basic seed production

11 researchers including 4candidates of sciences work at the department.

Main research directions:

  • developing new methods of obtaining and propagating healthy seed material and improving those in use;
  • developing new methods of intensive reproducing basic, original seed material and potato elite, aimed to maintaining productive qualities of variety, and improving those in use;
  • trying original seed material and producing on the base of it elite seeds of listed into the Register and promising potato varieties.

Department Scientific-economical and Marketing Research

The head of the department is a

14 employees including.

Main directions of work:

  • substantiating economic-organizational principles of potato market development in Ukraine;
  • supplying potato industry with information and consultation; it exercises systematization, analysis and publicity of completed research works and developments for using them in production, specifically be way of:
    • preparing and conducting conferences, workshops, meetings, courses, etc.;
    • publishing literature on potato production problems (collections, brochures, recommendations, information leaflets);
    • participating in arranging standing and temporary exhibitions (specimens of potato varieties, seed production and technological developments, special literature);
    • supplying researchers of the Institute and other scientific institutions, conducting research on potatoes, collective and private farmers and other commodity producers with information and statistical materials, normative and technical documents, standards and so on;
    • executing drawing up contracts on use of scientific and technical productio;
    • maintaining tight contacts with consumers.

Polis’ka Experimental Station named after O.N. Zasukhin

The director is a candidate of agricultural sciences Vasyl I. Sidorchuk

Polis’ka experimental station named after O.N. Zasukhin was founded in 1914 by Kyiv province zemstvo.

When the Ukrainian Research Institute of Potato Economy (now UAAS Institute for Potato Research) was established in 1968, Polis’ka experimental station became subordinated to it.

18 researchers including 3 candidates of sciences work at the station.

Main research directions:

  • developing new chiefly early and medium early potato varieties;
  • developing and introducing a technological process of elite potato production;
  • potato production technology.
